A historic complex in South Delhi around a large reservoir built by Sultan Alauddin Khalji in the late thirteenth century to supply water to the city of Siri; its name means «royal tank», and Delhi Sultanate buildings overlook it. Under Firuz Shah Tughlaq in the fourteenth century the tank was cleaned out and a large madrasa and a mosque were built on its bank, along with the sultan's own domed stone tomb; the madrasa's arcaded wings run in an L-shape above the lake. The complex is surrounded by a deer park and a large park around the lake where locals come to walk, and next door Hauz Khas Village has become a trendy district of cafés, galleries and design shops. Entry is free and it opens daily from morning into the evening, per visitor guides. It's loveliest just before sunset, when the stone arches reflect in the lake.
