Heping Island Park is a coastal park on a small island in Keelung, joined to the mainland by the Heping Bridge. Its main attraction is rock shaped over the years by wind and sea into mushroom forms and neat shelves that look like woven mats, with an open view of the ocean. Access to the area was restricted for a long time, then the limits were gradually lifted in the 1960s and 1970s and tourists began to come. Parts of the park closed from the end of 2010, and it reopened fully in June 2012 after renewal. The island also appears on older maps as Hoping. You walk on wood and stone paths among formations with names such as Tatami Rock and Pig's Trotter Rock. The stone is a warm yellow topped with green algae, with green cliffs and small islands behind. The park has a seawater pool, a visitor centre, benches and cafes. On the far side the sea lies open, with ships heading into the port. The park is 4.6 km in a straight line north-east of central Keelung, with buses from Keelung Station. The rocks are slippery when wet and sharp at the edges, so wear suitable shoes and watch the waves. Wind is strong in winter, so bring a jacket. The best light comes late in the day. Respect closed zones, which protect the rocks.
