Herrenchiemsee is a group of royal buildings on Herreninsel, the largest island in Lake Chiemsee in southern Bavaria, about 68 km southeast of Munich and 49 km west of Salzburg in a straight line. The island was once the site of a monastery, and King Ludwig II of Bavaria bought it in 1873, turning its buildings into a residence known as the Old Palace. From 1878 he built the New Palace there on the model of Versailles; it was his largest and last building project and was never finished. The palace has a long Hall of Mirrors modelled on the one at Versailles. The New Palace stands with its long pale stone facade, columns and statues in front of formal French gardens with large fountains and pools. A long grass avenue between rows of trees runs from the palace down to the lakeshore, and forest, blue water and mountains surround the island. Visitors take the boat from Prien on the lakeshore to the island in about 15 minutes, then walk or ride a horse-drawn carriage to the palace and tour it with a guide. The neighbouring island of Fraueninsel, with its small village, can also be visited.
