A quiet old town in the far west of Yunnan, founded under the Ming, whose stone and timber houses spread up a hillside above rice fields and a small river crossed by stone bridges; it is listed as a historic and cultural town of China. Heshun is one of China's best-known home towns of overseas Chinese families. Visitors walk its stone-paved lanes past old clan halls with decorated gates, the stone memorial archway at its entrance, little washing pavilions on the riverbank where women once did the laundry, a great wooden water wheel, and the Heshun Library, a protected monument. Tickets cost CNY 55 and allow seven days of entry, students and seniors 30, an evening ticket 30, and the town is open from 7.30 am to 10 pm, per visitor guides.
