The Hintersee is a small mountain lake in the municipality of Ramsau in Berchtesgaden Land, southeast Bavaria, Germany, about 2 km west of central Ramsau, 11 km west of Berchtesgaden and 27 km southwest of Salzburg in a straight line. It covers 16.4 hectares. The lake formed some 3,500 to 4,000 years ago, when a rockfall from the Hochkalter massif dammed the Klausbach stream and at the same time created the woodland known as the «Magic Forest». Its old name referred to trout. Sediment has reduced it to about a third of its original size. The clear, still water lies at the foot of the Reiteralpe and Hochkalter mountains, with small rocky islets topped by fir trees, so peaks and trees are mirrored on the surface. In autumn the trees turn gold, and at sunrise the peaks glow orange. Visitors follow the easy path around the lake, then enter the neighbouring Magic Forest, where the stream runs between huge moss-covered boulders. Some hire small boats, and early autumn mornings are best for reflections.
