Hitachi Seaside Park is a national government park in the city of Hitachinaka in Ibaraki Prefecture on the Pacific coast, about 12 km from Mito and 110 km northeast of Tokyo in a straight line. It covers 190 hectares, with flowers blooming throughout the year. The park is known for its baby blue-eyes (nemophila): 4.5 million of these translucent-petalled blue flowers bloom in spring and draw large crowds. It also has a million daffodils, 170 varieties of tulip and many other flowers, along with cycling trails and a small amusement park with a Ferris wheel. Its first section opened in 1991. In late April and early May a sky-blue carpet covers Miharashi Hill and seems to melt into the sky and the sea behind it. In autumn the round kochia bushes on the same hill turn red, with cosmos flowers blooming around them. Visitors walk the paths between the flower fields and rent bicycles to cross the large park. The nearest station is Ajigaura, and the park gets very crowded in the blue-flower season.
