The city's main beach, a strip of sand running about 7 kilometres along the Qiongzhou Strait on Haikou's west side; it was laid out as a public resort in 1995 next to Xixiu Park and is lined with landscaped promenades, palms and walking paths. People swim here in the calmer months, windsurfers and kitesurfers come for the wind, and it has hosted competitions in those sports and in beach volleyball. Its best-known corner is the barbecue area, hundreds of stone tables each with a grill at its centre, where Haikou's residents gather in the evenings and which is usually full at weekends, and from the beach the sun can be watched setting over the strait. The beach is free and always open, per visitor guides. The hour before sunset is the loveliest, and in the typhoon season from July to October check the forecasts before swimming.
