The Holy Spirit Cathedral is the mother church of the Belarusian Orthodox Church, in the Upper Town in central Minsk. It is one of the city's main landmarks, on a small hill above the Svislach River, and is listed as Belarusian cultural heritage. It was built between 1633 and 1642 as part of a Bernardine monastery under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, on a site that had earlier held an Orthodox monastery of Saints Cosmas and Damian. The site became Orthodox again in 1860. The building mixes Baroque style with features of the region's architecture. From outside you see a bright white cathedral with twin towers on the front, topped with small domes and crosses, and a front decorated with columns and arches. White buildings with green roofs stand beside it, a wide stair and a garden with flower beds lie in front, and it shines white under a blue sky. It is about half a kilometre from central Minsk in a straight line. It is a place of worship, so keep quiet and dress modestly. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Belarus, so read the current advice before any planning.
