One of China's loveliest old villages, at the southwest foot of Mount Huangshan; it was founded in 1131 by the Wang family, who became rich merchants, and together with nearby Xidi it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. It is famous for a layout shaped like an ox: the hill is its head, the two ancient trees at the entrance its horns and the four bridges over the stream its legs, while water runs through channels between the houses to the Moon Pond at the heart of the village and South Lake at its edge; scenes from «Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon» were filmed here. It keeps about 150 Ming and Qing houses with white walls and stepped black roofs, the best known being Chengzhi Hall with its fine gilded woodcarving, and art students sit along the lake painting the houses reflected in the water. Tickets are about CNY 94, with a combined ticket for Xidi from about CNY 159, per visitor guides. Tour groups crowd the village by day, so early morning and evening are the loveliest times.
