A zoo set in forest on the hills north of central Nanjing, covering about 68 hectares, 85 per cent of it green, spread over three hills, Little Hongshan, Great Hongshan and Fangniu Hill, with more than three thousand animals of over 260 species. It opened in 1998, when the old Xuanwu Lake Zoo moved here, and is known for its care for animal welfare and wildlife education: it was the first zoo in China to end animal shows, in 2011, and stopped visitors feeding the animals in 2014, and its animals live among the trees of the hills. Tickets cost CNY 40, a price unchanged for fifteen years. Arrive in the morning, when the animals are most active, and wear comfortable shoes for the paths that climb and dip.
