Huacalera is a small village in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a World Heritage valley, between Tilcara and Humahuaca, crossed by the Tropic of Capricorn, the line where the sun stands directly overhead at noon on the southern summer solstice. A stone marker and a sundial shaped like a white pyramid stand beside the road here, where travellers stop for photos. Around it rise the valley's red, yellow and green mountains, with small fields and poplars along the river, and the nearby hills give views over the village and valley. The village was once a stop on the colonial road, with an old school from 1825 and an archaeological site nearby. Stopping is free and quick, a good break between Tilcara and Humahuaca. At noon around 21 December things cast almost no shadow.
