An old river town south of Chengdu more than 1,700 years old, named after the Huanglong or «Yellow Dragon» stream that flows through it; most of its buildings date from the Qing dynasty. Cobbled lanes wind between timber houses with grey roofs, old wharves on the water and ancient banyan trees, and many directors have chosen it for the outdoor scenes of period films. Most houses have become gift and snack shops, visitors enjoy strolling the stream banks and taking boat rides, and folk festivities are held at certain times of the year. Wandering the town is free and possible at any hour, with separate tickets for some sights inside, per visitor guides. It's crowded on holidays, so visit on a weekday; many snacks contain pork.
