A historic anchorage on the Pearl River at Huangpu Village in Haizhu District, known to foreign traders as the Whampoa Anchorage. From 1758 to 1837 it was the only anchorage for foreign trading ships coming to Guangzhou, and 5,107 of them moored here over those eight decades, among them the Swedish ship Götheborg, which sailed here three times between 1739 and 1745. The wharf and its surroundings were rebuilt in 2006 to welcome a modern replica of the Götheborg that sailed from Sweden to Guangzhou. The area holds a memorial hall to the old customs house, an exhibition hall in a former clan hall and old Haibang Street on the bank, once a busy market beside the wharf. Wandering is free, and the neighbouring village has old southern-style houses and snack stalls, where halal food is not guaranteed.
