A section of the Great Wall in the far north of Tianjin, running along a sharp mountain ridge; its name means «Yellow Cliff Pass», said to come from the golden colour of its cliffs at sunset. It was first built more than 1,400 years ago under the Northern Qi and rebuilt in brick under the Ming. Under the Ming it was one of the key defensive passes of the north, and the famous general Qi Jiguang oversaw its repair and fortification; this section gathers almost every element of the Wall: a water gate over the river, square and round watchtowers, forts and beacon towers. More than 3 kilometres were restored in 1984 along with 20 towers, and at its foot stands a «maze» fortress housing the first museum of Great Wall history along its length, with summer evenings for visiting the wall by night. A day ticket is about CNY 85 and an evening ticket about CNY 68, per visitor guides. The steps are very steep in many places, so wear comfortable shoes; it pairs with a trip to the old town of Jizhou.
