An imperial garden complex at the northern foot of Mount Li, about 25 km east of Xi'an, famous for natural hot springs used for some three thousand years, where several emperors built palaces. Its best-known story is that of the Tang emperor Xuanzong and his consort Yang Guifei, whose name is tied to the stone bathing pools that survive on the site, one of the most famous love stories in Chinese tradition. Pavilions, halls and a lake in traditional Chinese style are spread through the gardens, with views of Mount Li, which you can climb by cable car, and grand open-air evening performances tell the famous love story. Entry is ticketed and the evening shows are priced separately; visitor guides disagree on the figures, so check when booking. It's on the way to the Terracotta Army, so the two combine easily in one day.
