The largest lake in Inner Mongolia and one of China's largest freshwater lakes, covering 2,339 km² amid the Hulunbuir grasslands near the city of Manzhouli; it is also known by its Mongolian name, Dalai Nur, «the lake like a sea». Open grassland stretches around it as far as the eye can see and reed beds line its shores. The lake and its marshes form a nature reserve, a biosphere reserve and a Ramsar wetland that shelters many migrating birds; at sunset its colours change and it looks like a shoreless sea, and it is an important local fishery. The lakeside scenic area costs CNY 40 and is open all day, per visitor guides; it is at its best in summer from June to September, and the shore wind is cool even then.
