Ibicoara is a town of about twenty thousand people in the south-west of the Chapada Diamantina in Bahia, home to two of the region's greatest sights: the Buracão waterfall, which plunges into a narrow rock canyon, and the Fumacinha waterfall in its deep valley. Its Tupi name means «hole in the ground» or «burrow», from «yby», earth, and «kûara», hole. It is the visitors' base for the southern Chapada, from where dirt roads lead to the falls and trails with local guides. The town is one of the North-East's leading coffee and vegetable growers, also grows apples, and is known for handicrafts and beekeeping. Ecotourism is growing fast, and its simple pousadas and restaurants make a good overnight stop before the waterfall trips.
