A small island in the lagoon off the east coast of Mauritius and one of the island's loveliest spots, with white sandy beaches, shallow, calm turquoise water and shady casuarina trees. Boats reach it from the village of Trou d'Eau Douce in about fifteen minutes, and many trips stop on the way at the Grand River South East waterfall, where the river tumbles over rocks straight into the sea. The island has plenty of water activities: paddling, parasailing, glass-bottom boats and snorkelling, plus beach restaurants and cafés, and a well-known golf course covering much of it. The island itself is free, and boat fares and activities are priced with the operators. It gets crowded at weekends, so visit on a weekday and arrive early, before the big boats come in.
