Ilha da Gipóia is the second-largest island in the Ilha Grande bay after Ilha Grande itself, in the municipality of Angra dos Reis: about 6 square kilometres of thick forest rising to 287 metres. Its name probably comes from a Tupi word for the boa constrictor, for an outline like a snake winding across the sea. It has both calm and rougher beaches for swimming and snorkelling, and walking trails; the best known is Praia do Dentista, «Dentist's Beach», which gets busy at weekends. Boats from Angra dos Reis or from Abraão on Ilha Grande take 15 to 30 minutes. Weekends there are loud and drink-heavy, so go on a weekday for quiet.
