Ilha das Couves, «Cabbage Island», is a small island off northern Ubatuba with very clear water. It is an environmental protection area, so visits are tightly controlled: 177 visitors per shift, and no one may stay more than three hours. Boats leave Picinguaba beach for a 10-15 minute crossing in three fixed shifts, at 8:00, 11:00 and 14:00, and Almada beach in about 25 minutes; tours also run from Prumirim and Itaguá beaches. Book your place on a boat ahead in holidays and summer, and bring water and sunscreen.
