Ilha de Maré lies in the Bay of All Saints and belongs to the city of Salvador, counted as one of its neighbourhoods since 2017. It has eleven communities, five of them recognised as quilombolas, villages founded by descendants of enslaved Africans. It is known for its bobbin lace and for the church of Nossa Senhora das Neves, dating from 1552. Boats leave the São Tomé de Paripe terminal on Salvador's outskirts about every twenty minutes for about R$8, a crossing of some twenty minutes, with the last around 17:00; parking at the terminal is R$20.
