Ilha do Cardoso is an island belonging to Cananéia, the southernmost point of São Paulo state near the border with Paraná. It is protected by the Ilha do Cardoso State Park, created by decree on 3 July 1962 to protect the Atlantic Forest; sources give its area as anything from 13,600 to 22,500 hectares. Caiçara communities, the coast's traditional fishing people, have lived on the island since the 19th century, in eleven communities, among them the village of Marujá with about eighty families. The island has deserted beaches, forest trails and archaeological sites, and dolphins are common around it. It is reached by boat from the Cananéia quay across the bay; the park has three centres, of which Perequê and Marujá are set up for visitors. Pereirinha is Cananéia's best-known beach, with access capped at a thousand visitors a day. Book the boat ahead and check the park's rules.
