Combu Island is a river island off Belém, across the Guamá River, protected as an environmental area and reached by boat in fifteen to twenty minutes. It gives visitors a glimpse of Amazon riverside life just outside the city, on narrow channels where boats are the way to get around. People come for the riverside restaurants and for Filha do Combu, the chocolate workshop run by Dona Nena from the island's own cocoa, where you see chocolate made from pod to bar. Boats leave from the Praça Princesa Isabel pier in the Condor district, which operates daily 9:00-19:00, for about R$24 return according to the island's official site, a little more to stop at the chocolate house. Bring insect repellent.
