Ilha do Farol, or Cabo Frio Island, is a rocky island off Arraial do Cabo with Praia do Farol, a beach of fine white sand and startlingly clear turquoise water that many count among the most beautiful in Brazil. The island is a protected area under the Brazilian Navy, and it can only be visited on licensed boats and for a limited time. Boats stop at the beach for about 30 to 40 minutes for a swim, as part of a sea tour usually lasting four and a half hours that passes caves and other coves. The water is fairly cold even in summer, chilled by deep ocean currents. Tours leave the town quay in the morning, at prices that vary by boat, plus a small boarding fee at the quay. There are no services on the beach, so bring water and keep to the set stop time.
