Ilha do Guajiru is a locality in Itarema on the western coast of Ceará that, despite its name, is a peninsula rather than an island: a strip of sand about four kilometres long and five hundred metres wide, built up by sediment at the mouth of the Aracatimirim River, separating the open ocean from a shallow, waveless inner arm of the sea about a metre deep with a flat sandy bed. This lagoon, known internationally as the «Kite Lagoon», is considered one of the best places in Brazil for kitesurfing, thanks to the combination of steady trade winds, calm shallow water and a sandy bottom. The windy season runs from June to January, peaking in September and October at a steady 22 to 30 knots, while February to May is the low season with irregular winds. The sand strip belongs to the Brazilian Navy, so there are no buildings or shops on it; hotels, kite schools and restaurants are concentrated at Praia da Barra on the mainland side. It lies about 220 kilometres from Fortaleza and some 55 kilometres from Jericoacoara airport.
