Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) lies 4 km off the coast of Paraná at the mouth of Paranaguá Bay. About 95% of it is protected as an ecological station and state park, visitors are capped at 5,000 a day, and no motor vehicles or even animal-drawn carts are allowed; there are no paved roads. Running water only arrived in 1985 and electricity in 1988. Boats from Pontal do Sul cross in about 30 minutes to two landings: Nova Brasília, near the isthmus joining the island's two halves, and Encantadas at the far end, whose sea cave is the island's main natural attraction. Near the Nova Brasília pier stands the Farol das Conchas lighthouse, built in 1872 with materials brought from Scotland and still working. The crossing costs about R$49 per person, boats run from 8:00 to 18:00, and an entry fee for the island was being introduced with a new visitor-control system.
