Ilha dos Frades, «Island of the Friars», sits in the middle of the Bay of All Saints and belongs to the city of Salvador. It is 6 km long, shaped like a many-pointed star, covered in remnants of Atlantic Forest, and protected within the bay's Environmental Protection Area. Its name is said to recall two friars killed there early in colonial times. It has a dark history too: it was a stop in Bahia's slave trade, and in the 19th century it was used by the illegal trade, with enslaved Africans landed there and led into the interior, until slavery was abolished in Brazil in 1888. Most people visit on a day trip by schooner from the tourist pier in Comércio, usually combined with Itaparica Island: R$110-160 a person depending on the operator, plus a boarding fee of about R$16 at the terminal and an environmental fee of about R$25 on arrival at the island. Boats leave in the morning and return to Salvador at around 17:00-18:00, and drinks and meals on board and on the island are extra.
