The resting place of Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa at-Tirmidhi (824-892), compiler of «al-Jami'», known as the Sunan of al-Tirmidhi, one of the six canonical collections of the Prophet's hadith. Born near Termez, he studied under Imam al-Bukhari and is said to have lost his sight in his last years. He died on 13 Rajab 279 AH (October 892) in the village of Bugh and was buried on the outskirts of Sherobod, about 60 km north of Termez; in Termez he is known as «Termez Ota», the Father of Termez. Today the complex spreads through gardens, with the tomb and its carved marble cenotaph, a mosque, galleries and pilgrims' buildings under pale domes against the mountains; it has been renovated and enlarged in recent years. It is one of the most visited shrines in southern Uzbekistan. Entry is free. It is a shrine and a mosque, so dress modestly, women cover their hair, and prayer times are best avoided. The drive from Termez takes about an hour.
