Imbituba is a coastal town and port on the south coast of Santa Catarina, with about 53,000 people some one hour from Florianópolis, holding some of the state's finest beaches among hills and lagoons. Human presence on its coast goes back some six thousand years with the builders of the shell mounds, the sambaquis, followed by Tupi-Guarani peoples. Until the mid-twentieth century it was a whaling centre; today it lives from its port and tourism, home to descendants of Portuguese, Italian and German settlers. Its land includes the famous Praia do Rosa and Praia da Vila, with nearby islands and the lighthouse nature trail; Vila has one of Brazil's best surf breaks and hosted the world surfing championship from 2003 to 2010. Southern right whales pass offshore in winter.
