Inhotim is one of the largest open-air art centres in Latin America, combining a contemporary art museum with a vast botanical garden in Brumadinho, some sixty kilometres from Belo Horizonte. The businessman Bernardo Paz founded it in 2004 to show his collection, and it opened to the public in 2006. Around two dozen art pavilions are spread through the grounds among lakes and forest, holding more than five hundred works by Brazilian and international artists, some of them whole pavilions built for the site. A botanical garden rich in palms and tropical plants surrounds them, and part of the land is a nature reserve. The grounds are very large, so allow a full day and wear comfortable shoes; small carts run between the pavilions for an extra fee. Entry is free on Wednesdays with an online ticket booked ahead, and on the last Sunday of the month.
