An elegant white neoclassical building opposite Ipoh railway station, designed by the British architect Arthur Benison Hubback, who also designed the station itself and Kuala Lumpur's Masjid Jamek, and completed in 1916 after delays caused by the First World War. It was built as a hall for civic and cultural life and to house the main post office, and it hosted concerts, plays and weddings; the Indian poet Tagore spoke here in the late 1930s, and the Malay Nationalist Party held its first congress here in 1945. The state police later occupied it for years. Its facade of white columns, arches and verandas is crowned by a triangular pediment bearing the name of the town hall and the date 1914, and the building is lit at night, when it looks its best. A visit is mostly to see it from outside. With the station opposite, it forms one of the finest colonial squares in Malaysia, so photograph the two together from the garden between them, then carry on to the old town.
