Isabel Segunda is the historic and administrative centre of Vieques island, on its north coast. It is a small town of about 1,354 people with a handsome blue town hall, a central plaza and quiet streets, and it makes an easy base for exploring the island before heading to its beaches and glowing bay. Vieques lies about 13 km east of the main island and is about 32 km long and 7 km wide. Its name is said to come from a Taíno word meaning «small land». Spanish laws laid out town plazas as places for celebration. Punta Mulas Light first shone over the north in 1896, guiding ships past dangerous reefs. On the plaza you see the blue town hall with its tower, flags and benches, and tree-lined streets rise to a hill with Fort Conde de Mirasol, where the view takes in red roofs, coloured trees and sea. Nearby stands the white Punta Mulas Light, restored in 1992 and housing a museum of Vieques's maritime history, with grass and palms before it. Ferries and small planes link it to the main island, so check schedules ahead, as the sea can change them. The lighthouse is about 460 m in a straight line from the town centre, within walking distance. Hire a small car if you want to see the whole island. Bring a hat and water, check museum hours, which may change, and respect residents' quiet.
