A small, quiet island east of Isla del Sol, with fewer visitors and more calm, home to a few families who live by farming and herding, with dry hills, ancient farming terraces and rocky shores over clear blue water. Its main site is the Inca temple of Iñak Uyu, known as the palace of the «chosen women», who were prepared to serve the temple and weave fine textiles. Its stone walls, with trapezoid windows and doorways, still stand on the slope above the shore. From the island's hills there are superb views of nearby Isla del Sol, the snowy Cordillera Real to the east and water stretching in every direction like a sea. Small herds of llamas live here. It is usually visited on a boat tour combining it with Isla del Sol in one day. A small community fee is paid at the pier. The lake sits at about 3,800 metres, with a scorching sun and cold nights, so bring sunscreen and a jacket. Bolivia is under a state of emergency with protests and road blockades, so check road conditions and your government's travel advice before the trip.
