A small protected wildlife island off the town of Pedasí on the Azuero Peninsula, about 53 hectares in all, with a small patch of dry tropical forest and more than forty hectares of coral reef holding some seventeen coral species and over three hundred fish species. Small boats reach it from Playa El Arenal in about twenty minutes, landing visitors on a white-sand beach. The island has big iguanas basking on sand and rocks, a large frigatebird colony nesting in the trees and a short trail looping through the forest. Snorkelling from the beach reveals the reefs, colourful fish and sometimes turtles. Roughly from July to October humpback whales pass near the island and are sometimes seen from the boat. Pedasí is a small, quiet town in southern Azuero and a base for the region's beaches. Boats stop when the sea is rough, and the sun burns on the sand. Never feed or touch wild animals, and watch them from a distance.
