Itabirito is a town of about 56,000 people in the Iron Quadrangle of central Minas Gerais, some 55 kilometres from Belo Horizonte, halfway to Ouro Preto. Settlement began in the late seventeenth century with the gold finds around Sabará and Ouro Preto, and the district of Itabira do Campo was created by royal order in 1752. As the gold ran out, its economy gradually turned to the iron ore the region is famous for. The municipality includes 10% of the Serra do Gandarela National Park. Its sights include the Station tourist complex around the preserved railway station, the cultural centre and the rocky Pico de Itabirito, the town's emblem. It is famous for «pastel de angu», a fried cornmeal pastry counted as the town's cultural heritage, with a route among the restaurants that serve it.
