Itaparica, at the entrance of the Bay of All Saints about 10 km from Salvador, is a 146 km² island with 40 km of beaches and lush tropical vegetation, shared between the municipalities of Vera Cruz (87%) and Itaparica. Amerigo Vespucci arrived on 1 November 1501; the Jesuits set up an outpost in 1560, the Dutch occupied it and built the Forte de São Lourenço, and it later had a naval shipyard, lime kilns, whaling and Brazil's first steam engine, on the Ingá-Açu plantation. It was the scene of an important battle in the 1821-1823 struggle for Bahia's independence. The ferry from Salvador's São Joaquim terminal to Bom Despacho runs hourly from 5:00 to 23:30 (from 6:00 on Sundays), taking 40 to 60 minutes; foot passengers pay R$6.90 on weekdays and R$9.20 at weekends.
