Itirapina is a small town of about 16,000 people in central-east São Paulo state, at 770 metres a short drive from São Carlos, part of the Serra de Itaqueri tourist circuit of waterfalls and viewpoints. Its best-known sight is the Broa reservoir, also called the Lobo dam, opened in 1936 to feed a hydroelectric plant and now a municipal beach for swimming, boating and water sports. Its land holds about twenty waterfalls, the tallest being the 70-metre Cachoeira do Saltão. Among its viewpoints is Morro do Fogão, 1,100 metres above sea level with rock walls a hundred metres high. The municipality holds more than half of the Itirapina Ecological Station, which protects cerrado savanna. It makes a good outing from São Carlos or Rio Claro.
