Ivoti is a small town of about 25,000 people in Greater Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, at 127 metres on the way up to the Gramado hills, nicknamed the «City of Flowers» for the many flowers grown here and filling its gardens. It was first called Berghahnerschneiss, the Berghahn trail, after two Berghahn brothers who were its first German settlers, and in 1867 it became a district named Bom Jardim under São Leopoldo. Its settlers' descendants still farm small family plots. Besides its German heritage, Japanese immigrants founded a colony in the Vale das Palmeiras in 1966, growing vegetables and flowers. Visitors stroll among old European-style houses and flowering gardens, and it makes a quiet stop between Porto Alegre and Gramado.
