İztuzu is a 4.5 km beach near the town of Dalyan in the Ortaca district of Muğla Province, southwest Turkey, about 6 km south of Dalyan in a straight line. The beach is a narrow spit of sand separating the freshwater delta of the Dalyan river from the Mediterranean. It is one of the main breeding grounds of loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean, so it is often called «Turtle Beach». The loggerhead is on the IUCN Red List of endangered species, so the beach has been protected since 1988 as part of the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area. The long golden spit runs between the blue sea on one side and the delta waters and green reeds on the other, with green rocky hills around. The water is clear and shallow near the shore, and markers on the sand show where turtles nest. Visitors arrive by river boat from Dalyan through the channels and reeds, or by car. They swim in the sea or the warm delta water; the beach closes at night in the nesting season to protect the turtles, so respect the nests and keep away from them.
