A towering range north of Lijiang covered in snow all year round, its highest peak Shanzidou at 5,596 m; its name, «Jade Dragon», comes from its look of a white dragon stretched across the sky, and it is a sacred mountain to the Naxi. Visitors ride the Glacier Park cable car to about 4,506 m, where boardwalks run between rocks and snow overlooking glaciers and peaks, or a shorter cable car to Spruce Meadow among the forests at about 3,240 m. At the foot of the mountain lies Blue Moon Valley, a chain of clear turquoise lakes stepping down the slopes, fed by meltwater from the ice, one of the loveliest sights in the area. The area ticket is about CNY 100, the Glacier Park cable car about 140 extra and the Spruce Meadow cable car about 60; cable cars are booked by name a week ahead and sell out fast in season, per visitor guides. The altitude is extreme, so climb slowly, bring warm clothes, and avoid it if you have heart or breathing problems.
