Japaratinga is a quiet coastal town of about 9,500 people on the north coast of Alagoas, between Maragogi to the north and Porto de Pedras to the south, on the Coral Coast known for warm-water beaches and natural reef pools. The town began as a fishing colony where the town hall stands today and grew from 1800 with the coconut cycle; by 1935 it had a small yard building the ships that carried coconuts. A track passable only by animals linked it to the main road to Porto Calvo. Today tourism is its main activity, with many hotels and pousadas and a resort named Best Resort in the «O Melhor de Viagem e Turismo» awards for 2024/2025. Its beaches are lined with coconut palms and calm water, and natural pools appear on the reef at low tide.
