The Santos Botanical Garden, or the «Chico Mendes» Municipal Botanical Garden in honour of the famous environmental activist, is an ecological park that preserves plant species and grows the seedlings that adorn Santos's famous beach gardens and city squares. It was founded in 1925 as a municipal nursery next to the Santa Casa hospital, moved to its present site in 1973 and became a botanical garden in 1994. Renovated in 2001, it gained a fountain and a wooden deck on its large lake for cultural events. It is the second-largest green area on the island part of Santos, covering 90,000 square metres, with more than 300 plant species in twenty collections, chiefly Atlantic Forest and Amazon plants, a grove of «pau-brasil», the tree that gave Brazil its name, and precious hardwoods. Entry is free; it suits a calm, shady family walk away from the beach heat. Check opening times.
