Recife's Botanical Garden is a living witness to the Atlantic forest that, with restinga and mangrove, once covered the city's original site. It was created in 1965 by reorganising the Curado zoological and botanical park, part of the forest of an old agricultural research institute, and the city of Recife has run it ever since. The garden covers 10.7 hectares within the 113.6-hectare «Matas do Curado» municipal reserve, most of it army land. It has forest nature trails, a permanent Atlantic-forest exhibition, an orchid house where orchids are shown, grown and exchanged, an apiary of native stingless bees, and nurseries of medicinal plants and forest trees. It belongs to the Brazilian Network of Botanic Gardens and, through it, to Botanic Gardens Conservation International. Entry is free. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-15:00 and runs nature activities for children in the school holidays. It lies west of the city on the BR-232, so go in the morning by car or taxi.
