Baron's mansion.
Praça Barão do Rio Branco, popularly known as the Jardim do Liceu, is the central public space of Campos dos Goytacazes in northern Rio de Janeiro state and part of the city's historic quarter, with colonial-style architecture. The square takes its popular name from the Liceu de Humanidades building that faces it, originally a nineteenth-century baron's mansion and a symbol of the sugar-based rural economy, bought in 1883 to house the Liceu, one of the oldest schools in the region. The square also has an old bandstand listed as a historic site. Today it remains a meeting place for residents and hosts a monthly «Samba na Praça» music event. It suits a short walk around central Campos among the old buildings, and can be combined with a visit to the Farol de São Thomé beach or Lagoa Feia in the region.
