The Jardim do Nêgo is an open-air sculpture museum in the Campo do Coelho district, on the RJ-130 road between Nova Friburgo and Teresópolis. It was created by the artist Geraldo Simplício, known as Nêgo, and stands out for striking sculptures carved straight into earth banks, blending art and nature in a unique way. It began in 1981, when the artist had the idea of turning the earth banks on his land into monumental sculptures after seeing a human form in one of them, which became his first work. From then on he carved large human and animal figures, some up to ten metres tall, until the place became an open-air museum of nearly 30,000 square metres and one of Nova Friburgo's most visited sights. The sculptures are modelled directly in the ground with a mix of clay, stone and sand, then coated in mud and wrapped in plastic to encourage moss to grow, giving them a living green finish.
