The Franca Zoobotanical Garden is a municipal environmental institution in Franca, São Paulo state, about an hour and a half from Ribeirão Preto. It aims to preserve different plant species and native forest and to grow seedlings to plant trees across the city. It began on 10 December 1952 as a forest nursery created by the mayor of the day on the municipal Pouso Alto farm, to grow fruit tree seedlings, coffee varieties and ornamental flowers and to hand out seeds. In the 1990s it became a zoobotanical garden, and it was listed as city heritage in 1998. The garden holds a gene bank of regional plants from the cerrado and upland forests, able to produce up to 1.2 million seedlings, along with native forest and animals on display. It is a pleasant place for an outing and environmental education in a city best known for its shoe industry.
