One of the world's finest and oldest botanical gardens, founded in 1832 on some thirty-two hectares between the sea and the hill of Maqam Echahid, with thousands of species of trees and plants from five continents, the capital's green lung. The garden is famous for its long avenues shaded by giant plane trees, its banyan figs with aerial roots hanging like curtains, its rare dragon trees, flowerbeds and fountains, and it is divided into a formal French garden and a naturalistic English garden. The garden has a small zoo that families love, little lakes with ducks and cafés. Scenes from one of the first Tarzan films are said to have been shot among its trees. A metro station bears its name, and a cable car climbs from it to Maqam Echahid. Tickets are DZD 200 per adult, with the zoo an extra DZD 150, per visitor guides. Hours change with the season, from 10 am until 5 pm in winter and 7 pm in summer.
