The first cave opened to visitors in Slovakia, and **UNESCO-listed** among the caves of the Slovak and Aggtelek Karst. Its explored length exceeds **2,800 metres**, of which about 550 are visited on a guided tour of roughly 45 minutes through nine chambers on different levels. Its formations are rich and coloured — stalagmites, stalactites, curtains and columns — some in unusual shapes with descriptive names. But what genuinely distinguishes it is **the writing on its walls**. The cave was used as a refuge from the Stone Age onward, and visitors across the centuries left inscriptions on its rock. The oldest dated one is from **1452** and records one army''s victory over another in the Hussite wars — **the oldest dated historical inscription on a cave wall in Slovakia**, and a genuine document rather than graffiti. The cave holds a large **bat** colony, and part of it is used for respiratory therapy. Note: **a constant 8-9 degrees** all year — take a jacket. Tours run at set times.

Jasov — about 30 km west of Košice
A wide limestone plateau south-west of Košice running across the border into Hungary, where it is called **Aggtelek**. Together the two are **UNESCO-listed** as a single system holding over **a thousand caves**, of which only a few are open to visitors. Three matter most to a Košice visitor: **Jasovská Cave** (30 km), the nearest, with the historical inscriptions; **Domica**, on the border, the longest in the whole system and running into Hungary; and **Gombasecká**, known for its exceptionally long, thin «soda straw» formations. Above ground there is the narrow **Zádielska gorge**. ⚠ **All are guided at set times** and many **close in winter** — plan by the timetable rather than turning up.
