Montreal's largest public market and a local favourite, an open-air farmers' market opened in 1933 in Little Italy and counted among the largest open-air markets in North America, bringing Quebec's fresh farm produce together in one place. Rows of stalls are piled with colourful fruit and vegetables by season, from strawberries and berries in summer to apples and squash in autumn, and vendors offer visitors tastes before they buy. Around the stalls are shops selling Quebec cheeses, bakeries, spices and seafood, shops for maple products from syrup to sweets and butter, and prepared-food counters. In winter the sides of the market are enclosed and it carries on with fewer vendors. Entry is free and the market is open daily, reached by the Jean-Talon metro station. Saturday mornings in late summer, when the harvest peaks, are best.
