Wuhan's best-known shopping street, 1,550 metres long and mostly pedestrian, in Hankou on the north bank of the Yangtze; it grew up after Hankou opened as a port for foreign trade in 1861, and by the 1930s it was nicknamed «Little Hong Kong». Both sides are lined with early twentieth-century European buildings, old banks and stores with columns and domes that now hold shops, cafés and restaurants, and the street is packed in the evening when the façades are lit. At its southern end by the river stands the Jianghan Customs House, completed in 1924 with its clock tower, then the tallest building in Wuhan and now a museum, and beyond it stretches the long Hankou Bund with its riverside gardens and walkways. The street and the Bund are free and always open, per visitor guides. The evening, when the old buildings and the bridge lights along the river shine, is the best time.
